8/9/23: The Greatest Fun Run of all time Pt. 2
Written By: Ben Drury
Today I will be continuing my role as Race Director to construct the Greatest Fun Run of all time. Two weeks ago I wrote about the ideal Men’s field if you would like to read that click here.
The 5k is a great race and this Fun Run is, you guessed it a 5k. But, not all of these athletes are 5k specialists so this race is comprised of great competitors, so if they were put together a great race is bound to go down. So without further ado let’s get right into the Women’s Greatest Fun Run of all time.
Faith Kipyegon
The World Record holder in the 1500, Mile, and 5k, Faith Kipyegon has had one of the best seasons this year. She set three World Records this year and even better did so in the span of 49 days. Out of the three records, the most surprising one was her 5k record. It was surprising because it was a PR of 26 seconds. Faith would obviously be the heavy favorite in this race and I would be excited to see if she would win.
Alicia Monson
Another multi-record holder in this field is Alicia Monson. Alicia is the American Record holder in the Indoor 3k, Outdoor 5k, and 10k. Alicia has also had a great year, setting all three of her records this year. Alicia is surrounded by great athletes as being a part of the OAC, so she is no stranger to being around greatness, and this race would be no different. Alicia would perform very well in this race and maybe have a chance at podiuming.
Letesenbet Gidey
The reigning World Champion and World Record holder in the 10k, Letesenbet Gidey, is no stranger to the 5k. Letesenbet was the former record holder in the 5k until Faith Kipyegon broke her record by a little bit more than a second. Letesenbet also holds the World Record in the Half Marathon. I think Letesenbet would take her extremely good fitness and take to run a fast 5k and maybe it would help her win this race.
Sifan Hassan
The former World Record holder in the mile and reigning Olympic Champion in the 5k and 10k, Sifan Hassan, is another great addition to this field. Sifan decided this year to run her first marathon, and in her first marathon ever, she won, and not in any normal marathon, she won the London Marathon. However, Sifan hasn’t forgotten about the 5k, because she got into a fast 5k at the London Diamond League and placed 3rd. Sifan runs her races in a very distinct way, running from the back and kicking at the end. I think she would use this strategy to her advantage and put herself into contention for the win.
Gudaf Tsegay
The defending Olympic Bronze Medalist in the 5k, World Championships Silver Medalist in the 1500m, and World Champion in the 5k, Gudaf Tsegay, has had a great season winning two Diamond League races (one in the 5k, and one in the 1500m) and countless other races. Gudaf is a great 5k runner and another person who would be great in this race.
Tirunesh Dibaba
3 time Olympic Champion, Tirunesh Dibaba, has had a lot of success in running. Some of her successes include winning the Chicago Marathon and she has had three World Records in her career, her sister is also the former World Record holder in the 1500m and many other records, Genzebe Dibaba. This year Tirunesh has focused on road races such as the 10k and the Half Marathon distances. But, Tirunesh was a great 5k runner and is a great addition to this field.
Hellen Obiri
Boston Marathon, B.A.A 10k, and NYC Half Marathon champion, Hellen Obiri, is also a great 5k runner. Hellen is a World Champion in this event, however, this year she has been focusing more on the Road 10k, Half Marathon, and Marathon. But during the 5k-focused part of her career, Helen was a force to be reckoned with. If Hellen Obiri was in this race in the middle of her prime 5k shape, she would be tough to beat.
