9/20/23: The PRE Classic: All you need to know

Written By: Ben Drury

This past weekend the 2023 track season concluded at the Prefontaine or PRE Classic. This meet was for the first time ever the host of Diamond League Final, this was first time the final has been hosted in the U.S. Over the span of the two day competition multiple National Records were set and two World Records were broken. Today, I will be telling you about those performances.

Nuguse breaks Alan Webb’s mile record

In the Bowerman Mile, Yared Nuguse of the On Athletics Club or OAC broke the American Record in the mile. The previous record was held by the high school national record holder, Alan Webb. Nuguse broke the record that had stood for sixteen years, he broke it with a time of 3:43.97. During the span of the race Nuguse was able to hold on to the World Leader Jakob Ingebrigsten (He ran the World Lead in this race) until the very end, where Ingebrigsten edged him out at the line. Going forward Nuguse will be a force to reckoned with and someone to keep an eye out for this upcoming Indoor track season and at the Olympics next year.

Fisher lowers his own 3k record

On Sunday, in the second day of competition, Grant Fisher of Bowerman Track Club lowered his American Record in the 3k. In a race that was very early on headlined as Jakob Ingebrigsten’s second race of the competition, Fisher ran a great race finishing only a few seconds behind Ingebrigsten. Fisher ran a time of 7:25.47 and broke his previous record of 7:28.48. Fisher who is more of a 5k focused athlete will have a great chance to lower his record over the next few years and he could cement himself as one of the all time great Americans. It will be interesting to see how he performs going forwards.

Tsegay nears Sub-14, still sets WR

On Saturday, in the women’s 5k, Gudaf Tsegay got within a few milliseconds of running a sub-14 minute 5k. In this race both of the former World Record holders Faith Kipyegon and Letesenbet Gidey were not present, and that gave Tsegay a great chance at breaking the World Record. Tsegay ran a time of 14:00.21 to break the World Record and she won by five seconds. A woman has never broken 14 minutes and it will be exciting to see it happen, and the question is who will be the one to do it.

Duplantis continues to heighten the bar

At the same venue where he set his World Record last year, Mondo Duplantis broke it again. On Saturday Duplantis raised the bar one centimeter above his previous World Record, and he succesfully was able to clear the bar on his first attempt. This year has been great for him as he as won a World title, Diamond League title, and he was able to set a new World Record. In Paris next summer, Duplantis is obviously the favorite. But the real question is, how high can he go.

Mu becomes first American woman to run under 1:55

In the last PRE Classic distance race, the Prevagen Women’s 800m, Athing Mu (uh-thing moe) the reigning Olympic Champion set a new American Record. Along with setting a new American Record, Mu became the first American woman to break 1:55 in the 800m. To obtain this record Mu had to beat the likes of Keely Hodgkinson, reigning Olympic silver medalist, Hodgkinson set her own British Record during this race. Like in this race, Paris’ 800m final will be one to watch for as Mu faces off against the rest of the world as she attempts to defend her title.
