Big News in Budapest
El Bakkali wins the three-peat
Yesterday in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, a battle went down between the reigning Olympic and World champion, Soufiane El Bakkali, and Lamecha Girma, the World Record holder, who has placed second in the past two World championships and the 2021 Olympics behind El Bakkali. Soufiane and Lamecha were neck and neck going into the last two laps, and it stayed that way until the last water jump where Soufiane took the lead and Lamecha fell off and was unable to keep up the pace, and Soufiane El Bakkali won his third straight World or Olympic title.
Kipyegon cements herself as the Best
Like the race I just mentioned, the women’s 1500m was a race featuring a rivalry. That rivalry consisted of two athletes, Faith Kipyegon, the World Record holder and the two-time defending champion, alongside the Olympic champion in the 5000m and 10000m, Sifan Hassan. These two were the obvious favorites and for good reason, since the past three titles have been split among them, Faith Kipyegon has two, and Sifan Hassan has one. For most of this race, Sifan was at the back executing her normal race strategy of running from the back, and Faith was doing her thing as well running from the front and dictating the pace. It stayed this way for a while until about 300 meters to go where Sifan made her move, But, unfortunately for her Faith Kipyegon made her move as well and ran away from the field winning by almost a second. Sifan was a little bit behind her placing third.
The Race of The Day
The race of the day today is a race that has been marked on calendars as possibly the race of the whole competition. That race is the men’s 1500m final, this race will be one for the ages and there very well could be a World Record run in this race. There might not be a World Record run in this race, but I can confidently say that this race will be one to watch. There has been one favorite for this race almost all year long, Jakob Ingebrigsten, he has been one of the faces of modern-era running for a while, however, there are some other great competitors such as Yared Nuguse, the U.S. Champion or Josh Kerr, the defending Olympic bronze medalist. This race is one you really should watch today.
Athletes To Watch For Today
Jakob Ingebrigsten
Jakob is the heavy favorite to win the 1500m title at this year’s World Championships, and rightfully so. Jakob has had a great season running records and climbing up the all-time list. He has broken the 2-mile World Record and currently sits at fourth on the all-time 1500m list. He will be attempting to win a title after losing to Jake Wightman at the World Championships last year. You need to watch for Jakob Ingebrigsten because something special happens every time he steps on the track.
Noah Lyles
Just three days ago Noah Lyles won the men’s 100m in a world lead, and he did so in an event that he placed third in at the US Championships. Noah is primarily a 200m runner, and that is his specialty. He came to Budapest to win the 100m-200m double and that quest begins today as Noah competes in the first round of heats of the men’s 200m. Noah is always exciting to watch and you should tune in to watch him run today.
Sha’Carri Richardson
Sha’Carri Richardson shocked the world and won the women’s 100m and like Noah Lyles she will also be attempting the 100m-200m double. Similar to the 100m final Sha’Carri will have to face off against the reigning champion Shericka Jackson of Jamaica. Sha’Carri is an awesome athlete to watch and an incredible athlete period, so make sure to keep an eye out for her in her first-round heat today.
